MoMA × UNIQLO: Turning Free Friday Nights Into Something Visitors Could Take Home

6 Friday Nights | 1,199 Photo Sessions | ~200 Sessions Per Night

For years, UNIQLO has helped New Yorkers experience one of the world's most recognized museums for free. Over six consecutive Friday nights, the experience captured 1,199 photo sessions—roughly 200 per night. Guests left with a classic three-pose photo strip that doubled as a branded UNIQLO offer.

OutSnapped's Magbooth gave visitors another way to remember the night: a modern spin on the classic photo booth.

The Challenge

UNIQLO's partnership with The Museum of Modern Art wasn't built around a one-night brand activation.

The partnership has focused on making art more accessible. UNIQLO became the exclusive sponsor of MoMA's free Friday-night admission program, giving visitors access to the Museum's galleries, exhibitions, and programming.

That meant any brand experience inside the program needed to complement the museum visit, not compete with it.

The goal wasn't to create the loudest activation in the room.

It was to add something simple and social to a night people were already excited to experience.

The Experience

OutSnapped provided a traditional photo booth experience as part of the UNIQLO activation at MoMA.

No complicated AI transformation. No learning curve.

Visitors could step into the booth, take a photo, and leave with a physical keepsake from their night at the Museum. But the print wasn't only a keepsake. Each branded photo strip also directed visitors to UNIQLO's nearby store. From the second Friday onward, the offer became even more specific: $5 off SPRZ NY product at the UNIQLO store at 53rd Street and 5th Avenue.

That connected the museum experience to a next step outside the museum: guests walked away with both a memory from the night and a reason to visit the sponsor's store.

That simplicity made sense for the setting. People were already there to explore the art, exhibitions, films, and programming. The photo booth gave them a quick moment together without pulling attention away from the larger experience.

Why It Worked

It gave visitors something to take home.

Museum visits are experiences. A printed photo gave guests a physical reminder of the people they experienced the night with.

It added to the night instead of taking it over.

The photo booth didn't need to become the destination. It was a simple moment visitors could discover while experiencing everything else MoMA had to offer.

It made the sponsorship participatory.

UNIQLO was already giving visitors access to the Museum. The photo booth created another opportunity for people to interact with the partnership instead of simply seeing sponsor signage.

The format was instantly familiar.

Sometimes the right experiential technology is the simplest one. Guests already knew exactly what to do: step in, take a photo, keep the memory.

Across the six-night run, the booth sustained roughly 49 sessions per hour—about one session every 72 seconds during its operating windows.

The Bigger Picture

UNIQLO and MoMA have partnered since 2013 around a shared goal of making art more accessible. MoMA reports that more than 3.25 million visitors have enjoyed complimentary admission through UNIQLO Free Friday Nights and UNIQLO's sponsorship of free admission during the Museum's 2020 reopening.

The partnership has grown beyond admission to include family programming, digital content, and other initiatives designed to connect audiences with art.

Today, UNIQLO Friday Nights continue at MoMA, with free Friday-evening admission for New York State residents from 5:30–8:30 p.m.

The photo booth was one small piece of a much bigger partnership, but that's exactly why it worked.

It didn't try to become the art.

It gave people a way to remember being there.
